In Norse mythology, Hel is the goddess who presides over the realm of the dead, also named Hel. She is the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboða, and her siblings are Jörmungandr and Fenrir. Hel's domain is a place where those who die of illness or old age reside, distinct from those who die in battle and go to Valhalla. She is often depicted as having a half-alive, half-dead appearance.
